Alkantmooi Private Nature Reserve
Alkantmooi's Private Nature Reserve consists of 12 Hectares (29 Acres) of pristine Fynbos-a distinctive type of vegetation found only on the southern tip of Africa. As you enter the reserve, you start on your short journey on the dirt road up the hill to your destination. On the way, enjoy the indigenous fynbos flowers and keep an eye out for out for the many creatures that call this reserve home.
The best way to see the indigenous animals is to go for a walk through the private reserve early in the morning or in the late afternoon as that's when the animals are most active. Take a walk to the Keurbooms River and have a picnic in the park...you will be amazed at the amount of animals you will see if you just sit in one spot for a while. Make sure you schedule time to sit & enjoy the views from your private balcony, whether it be ocean view or mountain view...you will not be disappointed!
Alkantmooi Private Nature Reserve
Alkantmooi's private nature reserve borders the beautiful Keurbooms River Nature Reserve. You will drive by the Keurbooms River as you turn onto the road to get to Alkantmooi. Make your way up the hill for the most spectacular views in the area of the Keurbooms Nature Reserve, Keurbooms Lagoon, Plettenberg Bay and even Robberg Nature Reserve in the distance.
During your stay you will most likely hear and see the magnificent Fish Eagle soaring above the hilltop at Alkantmooi. Other animals you can see are babboons, vervet monkeys, bush buck, porcupines, mongeese, gorgeous butterflies, blue cranes, kingfishers, sunbirds and so much more. If you love nature, what better way than to stay right in the middle of it!
Keurbooms River Nature Reserve
Keurbooms River Nature Reserve is a World Heritage Site and conserves a variety of habitats including indigenous forest, riverine gorge, coastal fynbos and estuarine littoral dune fields. This is a sanctuary for forest and river birds, and visitors can expect to see a diversity of species, including the little grebe, Knysna woodpecker, fish eagle, black-headed oriole and narina trogon.
You can access the reserve a the bottom of Alkantmooi's property. You can rent a canoe, have a picnic or make a braai (BBQ) and enjoy the views. The best way to see the river and all of its wildlife is to get out on the water. There is a River Ferry, you can rent a motor boat or there are SUP tours you can take right from the shoreline at Alkantmooi's entrance.
Robberg Nature Reserve
Robberg is a World Heritage Site and is a popular nature reserve to visit when in the area. There are several different trails to choose from for hiking or if you just want to see the view, you can park and look at the views overlooking the ocean.
It's a great place to see whales, dolphins, sea birds and more. Rocks from this region date back 120 million years to the break-up of Gondwanaland and evidence of middle and later Stone Age inhabitation has been found in a few of the caves along the peninsula. Visitors can find out more at the Nelson Bay Cave interpretive centre. There is parking in the reserve which is just a short distance away and you can either hike or just take in the views from the cliffs & picnic area.
